AMOR DE DEUS !

ANTES

When I reflect on my ministry I see how wonderful God is in invovling me in his what He is doing, and I feel blessed.

In 2004, I went out onto the streets with my community for the first time. We went to the main square ‘praça XV’ and I would never have imagined being in such a depraved place -  so much poverty, and a stench that made me wrench I didn’t think I’d manage to stay. There were about 30 people including children, women, all drug addicts. At that moment I wanted to run away, my eyes filled with tears at seeing the desperation of those people, how much suffering, my heart was tense.

We gathered near the main area of road traffic, many people passing by on the bus, or by foot and there’d be taken aback by us being there, many stopped to see what we were doing and asked questions; they wanted to know if we were alright, if we knew where we are and with whom we were. We did activities, Bible stories, we’d sing, pray and share snacks; they could see that we were Cristians, they knew that only love would make someone spend time in such a place. Only love or despair could call someone to be where we were, and the only love that makes sense is the love of God, because it is the only love that makes people do crazy things like intentionally live in slums, on the streets and spend time with people involved with the crime, leaving their families and friends to serve the forgotten and the unknown. We did not need to preach this love with loud speakers in the middle of a busy square; we live simply this love!

In these 13 years of ministry, I see how much I have been an apprentice, and I recall a text from a book called “Do you want to come to hell with me?” Fr. Giampietro Carraro says: “When God calls you to work with our brothers on the streets, he puts in your heart a flame so strong that enables you to overcome any difficulty or instinctive desire to reject. It’s an authentic gift from the Holy Spirit which makes you able to embrace this brother with the same care and love that St. Francis embraced the leper, because drugs, whichever type it is, is today’s terrible and disgusting wound that requires a supernatural and divine strength to be overcome. Only by knocking down this barrier will you can reach the wounded and crushed heart of your brother crying out.

It was in one of these street outings that I met Michel, a 12 year-old boy, who was living on the street with her mother. She was taking drink and drugs and in turn he also took drugs, stole, and was leading  a miserable life. We often talked about Jesus and I recall once Michel asked me a question: “why are you here with us?” I looked at him and said, “Our obedience and love for God has put us here.” I knew he was a good boy, but unfortunately he was suffering because of his mother. He loved her so much that he preferring to live in those circumstances than to leave her alone, at the mercy of the evils of the streets. Then all his suffering drew to a close. God had a plan for Michel and about four years ago he accepted Jesus as his Saviour and now lives a full life, sharing the Word of God with people and is seeing God move mightily in his life, his life has been restored, he has a good job, and he has married a wonderful young lady called Larrisa.

I’m so grateful to God for hearing our prayers, how many times we have prayed for his life and now he has been blessed by God. My heart is gladdened and this encourages me to continue and not give up!
